This course will explore the profound significance of scent in ancient Greek culture, including all spiritual, medicinal and social dimensions. According to Aristoteles Myrepsiki is “ἐπιστήμη ποιητική ἡδονῆς” which means the science that creates hedonism.
Session 1: Introduction to Myrepsiki
- The energetics of smell
- The art of alchemizing oneness
- Overview of the role of perfume in ancient Greek culture
- The connection between smell and the divine: gods and goddesses associated with perfume
Session 2: Scent in Rituals and Worship
- Perfume as part of the Greek priestly
- The role of incense and aromatic substances in temples and sacred places
- The use of perfume in the worship of Aphrodite
Session 3: Mythology and Symbolism of Scent
- Exploration of myths involving scent
- Symbolic meanings of specific aromatic flowers in myths and their relevance to human emotions
- Discussion of the use of scent in storytelling and the arts
Session 4: The healing and medicinal aspects of aromatic substances
- Overview of ancient Greek medicinal practices
- The relationship between scent, health, and emotional balance
- Practical applications: Creating simple herbal infusions and essential oil blends inspired by ancient practices
Session 5: Modern Applications of Ancient Wisdom
- How to incorporate the sacred use of scent into modern life
- Group discussion on the impact of scent on well-being and spirituality today
